MRCPP steps forward as the National Center of Excellence for Pigments
Tuesday, 16 December 2014
Ma Chung Research Center for Photosynthetic Pigments (MRCPP) is proud to present a new face as the National Center of Excellence for Pigments. On Tuesday, December 16th 2014, Prof. Dr. H. Muhammad Nasir–the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education has officially designated MRCPP to be a National Center of Excellence (CoE). Dr. Brotosudarmo – the Head of the Center said that this achievement belongs to the Universitas Ma Chung, a young dynamic university that concerns in the advancement of scientific research, development and innovations that have direct link strategically to industries for economic developments. “Universitas Ma Chung became the first and now the only private university in Indonesia, which owns a National CoE” said Dr. Limantara – the university president. Until 2013, the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education has selected 16 research and development (R & D) institutions to be developed as the national CoE. Five institutions had been designated and 11 were on the development process. These five centers are Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI Medan), Center of Tropical Horticulture Studies (Bogor Agricultural University), Institute of Tropical Disease Universitas Airlangga (ITD Surabaya), Indonesian Coffee And Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI Jember), and Biopharmaca Research Center (Bogor Agricultural University). Started from January 2014, MRCPP belongs to the 11 institutions that were on the development. MRCPP has given a period of 3 years by the Ministry to achieve high standards of key performance indicator (KPI) targets in order to be designated as CoE. “However with hard working within a period of 11 months MRCPP has managed to acquire all the KPI and in this month we are officially a national CoE” – said Dr. Brotosudarmo This year there are 4 R & D centers receivedthe award and designated as the national CoE, i.e. Indonesian Rubber Research Institute (Pusat Penelitian Karet), MRCPP Universitas Ma Chung, Indonesian Biotechnology Research Institute for Estate Crops (Balai Penelitian Bioteknologi Perkebunan Indonesia), and Indonesian Legumes and Tuber Crops Research Institute (Balai Penelitian Tanaman Aneka Kacang dan Umbi, Balitkabi). In addition, there was one R & D center that has been extended as CoE, Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute (IOPRI Medan). Thus Indonesia has 9 national CoE under the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education. MRCPP is unique because the center focuses on the photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophyll and carotenoid. MRCPP uses these natural pigments as active ingredients, additives, and raw materials for foods, health and renewable energy. MRCPP studies and develops pigments-based products for dealing with national problems such as vitamin A deficiency, iron deficiency, the problem of synthetic dyes for food and drink, as well as for the renewable energy finding. The short-term focus of MRCPP at the moment are (1) the standardization of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments and their derivative through a trademark “NAT CHROM”, and (2) starting up a pigment industry that produces natural vitamin A from local resources, such as indigenous plans as well as micro- and macroalgae that can be cultivated in Indonesian water area. MRCPP seeks supports from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education; Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Industry; and local government as well as cooperation with industries.
